Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been issued across much of the south-west.

Intense heat alerts have additionally been issued for later this week in parts of South Australia and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure moves to the east, delivering blazing heat to much of the region.

A specific type of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn rainfall that resulted in the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Islands
