Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has begun implementing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect starting November 5th, according to a company memo shared with employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, since the limit is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks over several hours.

The Reseller Crisis

For the average collector, this approach might seem excessive, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the game's rising popularity.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the persistent interest and likely scalper target.

With any luck, the retail limits will help reduce bulk purchases and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
