The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
