The Owls Suffer Points Penalty Following Entering Administration

The club's fans described Wednesday as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” after the Championship side was placed into administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri with a 12-point penalty imposed.

Club Crisis Results in Points Penalty

Sheffield Wednesday now face likely demotion after the EFL’s penalty placed them at minus six points, 15 points from safety. Players and staff have not been paid on time in five of the past seven months, compounding the club's instability.

The appointed administrators have taken control of the process to sell Wednesday’s assets, including the team's home ground, to settle outstanding debts estimated at £1m in tax. Soon after the club entered administration, stadium seating with the owner's name were taken down from the North Stand.

Manager’s Perspective For New Beginning

Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen held talks with administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff early Friday. Pedersen stated entering administration was necessary for a fresh start.

Pedersen stressed “while difficult, this marks a positive turning point”, adding: “We knew from the last five, six, seven, eight months it cannot continue. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”

Staff Insecurity

Employees expressed emotion at the news, with Pedersen saying: “There is insecurity. Will wages be paid? What comes next? Will things improve? Will it not be better? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”

Ongoing Financial Struggles

The situation at Wednesday worsened significantly in recent months after the former manager and players left following unpaid wages. The EFL expressed concern about the club’s finances earlier this season.

Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, applying all revenue including league payments to address liabilities. With reports of an imminent winding-up order from HMRC, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.

Administrator’s Statement

A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss over multiple seasons, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration which will enable us to market the club and the stadium as a whole, which is great news for supporters.”

Government Reaction

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy commented on the situation served as another reminder of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation for the start of the 2027-28 season.

“My club Wigan faced similar issues, so I understand fans want a quick solution,” she added.

Supporter Actions

Wednesday fans have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise this season with many absent during the Middlesbrough match as part of ongoing protests. Before Oxford’s visit on Saturday, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.

“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild. Meaningful change is possible if we act. It's time to back the team.”

What Lies Ahead

The trust anticipates buyer interest but had been working on a “fan-led takeover proposal” guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

The manager, once an assistant, hasn't accepted demotion despite the severity of the challenge. “We must modernize while honoring tradition, he said. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I'm confident we can stay up. The fight continues.”
