During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
