The England national team will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they attain the expected entry for a tournament staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since May 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the national team for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their last-16 tie would occur at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
The tournament was unveiled at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were heckled as they arrived the venue by around fifty protesters, who urged the Israeli team to be expelled from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were raised with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of Euro 2028 will be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they qualify.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be adopted for European club finals from next season, will cater to families and help reach a broader range of audiences.
The Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the preliminary stage; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through that route.
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it became clear the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.
“The event will be a championship for the followers and a celebration of everything we cherish about the football – its fervor and ability to foster unity.”
In excess of three million tickets, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be made available to fans.
