During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the memories of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's early yearsâa moment that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show The First Shadow.
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
Considering what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held vials of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powersâtraits he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
A second theory, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
