Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first time since a small cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The performer vividly recalls the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.

"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Abound

While countless dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also exists.

Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
