NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, responding to latest criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments following the Broncos' remarkable comeback win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
