NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for most New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.

"The choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
