The state attorney general has launched a fresh digital platform urging citizens to submit images and footage of ICE operations throughout the state. This action comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action shook Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread protests.
A US congressman announced during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and kept for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Demonstrations occurred in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a announcement.
"If you witnessed and recorded federal operations yesterday, I urge you to submit that footage with my office. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
The form includes spaces to send photos and videos of the raid, as well as a field to note location information. Before submitting, individuals must check a checkbox that confirms that "authorities could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a court case or public report."
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say involved more than 50 federal agents, occurred in a famous district of the city where fake purses, items, goods and other goods are sold daily in large quantities â typically to tourists.
Recordings of the incident reveal numerous masked and armed federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of residents pursued the officers through the streets. An armored military vehicle was also seen traveling down the urban roads.
At a Wednesday press conference held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, said that four nationals were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be detained for no reason." He noted the persons were let go on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is merely a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to deploy the troops to prevent unrest that they have created."
Fury over the immigration operation quickly spread â every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the operation, along with NY's governor.
"Repeatedly, the current administration opts for oppressive displays that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," a contender stated.
New York City community groups voiced concern as well.
"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on small merchants working to survive. This action had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the president of a major immigrant coalition.
Official guidelines bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it refrains from apprehend citizens. However, external research has found that numerous American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the present government.
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide lately.
An October operation in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are commonplace as are allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document submitted by legal entities stated healthcare failures of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
