McLaren Points Finger at Competitors for Team-Mate Crash

Wheel flies off racing car after collision between Piastri and Norris

A wheel detaches from the McLaren of Norris after he made contact with fellow driver Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.

McLaren F1 team leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to rival drivers for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint race.

Piastri, ahead of Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, bounced into his fellow McLaren driver after hitting Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.

The collision eliminated both team drivers from the event, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Incident

Zak Brown, the team's chief executive officer, commented to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the front was "inexperienced", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

The team boss Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the possibility to race."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, ensure you don't damage other drivers and continue."

The team suggested that Stella was referring to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, former champion Hill, providing analysis for a sports broadcast, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the first corner of an F1 race when he chose to cut back to try to overtake Norris.

Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and at first challenged on the outside on the uphill entry to the turn.

But he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the way out, only to collide with Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Norris. A shame."

Norris said: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back events unfolded and I just was unfortunate and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers behind just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inner side, but some cars came very fast from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Major disappointment. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."

"Oscar steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and way out of the first corner but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inside and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will analyze the incident with their racers but not until the race weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on Saturday.

Stella said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."

"The points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more prudence would be beneficial for everyone."

Championship Implications

The sprint event was taken by the Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and 33 adrift of Norris.

Stella said: "The implication is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive car and two strong racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the championship race by race.
