Inter striker Lautaro Martínez scored a late double to earn his team a 2-0 victory at Pisa, ensuring the visitors firmly involved in the Italian league championship battle in spite of a somewhat shaky display.
Led by Cristian Chivu, Inter now are placed third in the standings with 27 points, tied with second-placed Roma and only one point adrift of leaders Milan. Meanwhile, Pisa occupy the 18th position with 10 points.
Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after enduring a derby defeat by Milan last weekend, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. Nonetheless, they were made to battle throughout by newly-promoted Pisa. The home team created numerous chances, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez drilled a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The forward then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.
Inter’s ability to convert even with pressure was decisive in securing the victory.
Across in Spain, the Basque side mounted a thrilling comeback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a goal five minutes into added time. The visitors’ goals came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly reduced the deficit and Ander Barrenetxea equalised three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro delivered the final say deep into added time.
Later on La Liga fixture, Real Madrid travel to Girona needing a victory to go back to the top ahead of Barcelona, who recorded a 3-1 win over Alavés on the previous day.
