Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he believed he had feathered the ball when he was given not out on review during day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test versus the English.
Following his reprieve on 72, Carey crafted a excellent 106 to help the home side post 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut shot to the bowling of Josh Tongue.
The England team lodged a strong appeal, certain they had detected an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.
Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the footage reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney showed a spike but this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.
Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a space between the bat and the ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"I thought there was a feather or some sort of noise when it passed the bat," stated Carey.
"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It made a convincing sound near the bat."
Questions have been raised about 'Snicko'' during the series after a number of dubious incidents.
England's bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.
"I don't think we've done anything about it so far but after today, maybe that might go a bit further," Saker remarked.
"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. That's the situation."
Carey's century was his maiden in the Ashes.
It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose dad passed away in September. His spouse was crying in the crowd as the batter marked the occasion by looking to the skies.
"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," stated Carey.
"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm fighting back the tears. But, no, it was great."
Carey has been at the centre of Ashes debate before.
He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, resulting in a febrile final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. That's how the game works; fortune plays a part."
"I might have gotten away with one."
