Fury Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism

Figures from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Post

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest

Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

“What a vile and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"

California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to defend the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another political figure.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
