From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a Fresh Project That Looks Very Different Yet Evolves The Same Ideas.

A key creative force behind The Last of Us is making his return into game development. The upcoming game, called Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it expands the ideas of his previous work prioritizing dynamic AI partners.

Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept

Revealed at a recent industry showcase, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. The game follows an elderly witch, a hero that defies traditional video game heroics. The foundational premise originated in an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.

"Imagine if you were without the sword or shield? What if you were somehow encumbered? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed the creative lead. "This felt incredibly compelling to explore the definition of a protagonist. Being a hero means fighting your way through challenges, but also encompasses sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."

The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie

While the game appears distinct on the surface, its groundbreaking system builds directly upon the technology developed for The Last of Us. This whole endeavor flowed from a key thought: "What if I could make an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive based on player actions?"

The mysterious beast within this adventure isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a curious child which observes and responds with evolving behaviors. First, it investigates its surroundings, resulting in silly antics. Then, it moves into a mimicry phase. Ultimately, it observes and assimilates grasping cause and effect.

  • As an instance: Should the beast observe an object being placed, it understands the action absent the context.
  • Subsequently, it may attempt to collect nearby items and test fitting them, mimicking the behavior.
  • True comprehension arrives when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, teaching through experience.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

Such advanced AI seeks to generate a deeply personal experience. The director emphasizes that the game functions as a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience instead of a scripted, action-heavy path.

"Each effort to insert more hardcore story beats for this project, the magic dissipated," the director noted. "The true vitality in this partnership lies in the fact that you as a player experiences unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."

This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, the new title marks both an evolution and a significant shift from the director’s iconic past work. The project is currently in development for Windows PC.
