Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their release of a controversial video.
The clip, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in military or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and defend this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can decline improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our national charter."
The clip appeared to provoke a heated response from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a unified statement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our country with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and retract his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this country and swore an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the former president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and posted on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation â regardless of party â should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of Congress instructing troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and establish all that."
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "There are active officials of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
