The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the beginning of her trial in the coastal city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over remarks she made on online platforms four years ago during fatal unrest in South Africa that followed the detention of her parent.
A seven-day period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and arson, caused at least three hundred killed and led to damage worth an projected $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
She has been accused of inciting this unrest and is charged with accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
The protests were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the ex-leader's apprehension for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an probe into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has consistently rejected the charges against her, with her attorney previously describing the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political party and ran against the ruling party.
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "political and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his kin.
A few of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the judicial building, while her father and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has argued that the proof presented by the state is insufficient and does not have substantial proof for a guilty verdict.
The legal proceedings continues as all parties present their evidence before the court in what is projected to be a carefully observed court case with major politically charged implications for South Africa.
