The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company with his partner, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Founders and Parent Company

The recent announcement deepens the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support

Mr. Cohen announced via social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

The new dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated that he will develop additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
