Australia's starting XI for the upcoming Brisbane Test remains unknown just hours out from the match start in Brisbane, with a final assessment of the playing surface necessary before the team management finalize a squad that could still contain Pat Cummins.
Vice-captain Steve Smith fronted an journalists on the eve of the Test but was not disclosing the final selection of the XI. However, he kept the possibility alive a surprise recall for Cummins, who was ruled out of the series opener due to a back issue.
“He’s looked quite impressive to me, the way he’s bowled in the nets,” the stand-in captain remarked. “Naturally match intensity differs, but he’s coming along well, he understands his fitness.”
The fast bowler was not initially selected in Australia’s 15-man squad for the next encounter, but nonetheless went to the Gabba to rehabilitate with the group. Smith confirmed he was on the right track and might still be called up at the 11th hour.
“It's a waiting game but as stated, he’s near,” the captain noted. “He’s done all the right things the recent period and we’ll see this afternoon when we assess that wicket whether he’s an option or not.”
A comeback for Cummins, which seemed improbable just a few days ago, would result in Perth debutant Brendan Doggett or even spin veteran Nathan Lyon losing their place.
Smith refused to guarantee Lyon’s place in the team when questioned about the off-spinner’s inclusion.
“Uncertain,” he said. “We will assess the pitch as I said and sum things up from there. This is a ground Nathan has performed brilliantly in the history, he’s a top performer. We’ll weigh up the alternatives and see how we go.”
Josh Inglis will also have to find out whether he has earned a recall. The player is the leading candidate to be included in place of the injured Usman Khawaja, with the left-hander touted to open the batting again after his century in the first Test.
“A heap of things are being discussed,” Smith explained. “The decision is pending what the wicket is like and from there we’ll finalize a playing XI.”
“[Inglis] is obviously a positive player,” Smith said. “Did really well on his debut in Sri Lanka, he’s been in great nick... He handles pace very well. So if he gets his opportunity I’m sure he’ll do really well for us.”
Along with Inglis, Beau Webster is under consideration to return to the side at No 6, on the assumption that Head opens the batting alongside the other opener, and Cam Green is promoted to No 5.
Smith noted a definite call on the lineup is possible this afternoon, but equally it could be delayed until the day of the match. The match starts at the Brisbane Cricket Ground at 1400 local (3pm AEDT) on tomorrow.
