A teenager from the state of NSW has been indicted after allegedly issuing several prank calls to first responders – a tactic referred to as “SWATting” – wrongly stating active shooter situations were happening at major retail and educational institutions throughout the America.
Australian authorities charged the boy on December 18th. Authorities allege he is a member of a suspected distributed digital criminal group concealed by computer screens in order to trigger an “immediate and large-scale SWAT team deployment”.
“Often young males aged from 11 to 25, are participating in activities such as swatting, releasing private info and computer intrusion to gain status, notoriety and prestige in their internet circles.”
In connection with the case, police took possession of a number of computers and phones and a prohibited firearm located in the juvenile’s home. This operation was executed by a joint police initiative formed in October 2025.
An acting assistant commissioner, issuing a warning, advised that people believing they can break the law from behind a computer and encrypted identities are being targeted.
Australian police stated it launched its investigation following tip-offs from US federal agents.
An FBI assistant director, from the global operations unit, remarked that the “risky and disruptive crime” of hoax 911 calls threatened public safety and wasted critical emergency resources.
“This investigation shows that secrecy online is an false notion,” he commented in a combined announcement with the AFP.
He added, “We are dedicated to working with our Australian counterparts, our international partners, and industry experts to find and hold accountable people who misuse technology to create danger to the public.”
The teenager faces multiple counts of misuse of telecom services and one count of unlawful ownership of a prohibited firearm. He potentially faces up to 14 years in a correctional facility.
“Our pledge (is|remains) to halting the damage and pain members of these digital criminal groups are causing to the community, operating under the false idea they are anonymous,” the official stated.
The youth was due to appear in a NSW youth court on the following Tuesday.
